Wednesday, December 12, 2012

The publication Business Insurance recently named Betty Coulter, director of risk management and insurance, as one of its 2012 “25 Women to Watch” in the industry.

As president-elect of the national Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA), Coulter will lead the largest risk management association dedicated solely to the practice of risk management in the public sector. PRIMA’s membership comes from more than 2,000 entities in greater than 1,800 jurisdictions; its members coordinate risk management, purchase insurance, manage human resources, administer safety and environmental programs, manage labor issues, oversee parks and recreation programs and much more.

A member of the University’s Department of Risk Management, Safety and Security, Coulter has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and holds a Risk Management Public Entity designation from the Center for the Advancement of Risk Management Education.

Prior to UNC Charlotte, she was the risk manager for the City of Asheville for seven years and for Catawba County for 13 years.  She also worked for the City of Hickory for five years as the risk and benefits manager.

Business Insurance’s annual “Women to Watch” recognizes business leaders and influential executives in the commercial insurance, risk management, employee benefits and related fields.

"The ‘Women to Watch’ program is an integral part of the Business Insurance calendar. The awards shine a light on women doing exceptional work in an industry that is still dominated at the executive levels by men," said Gavin Souter, editor of Business Insurance. "The 2012 honorees come from wide range of organizations and are at a variety of stages in their careers, but they all excel in their positions.”

Honorees were selected after an evaluation of nominations by Business Insurance senior editors. Nominees are chosen based on recent professional achievements, influence on the marketplace and contributions to the advancement of women in business. The list is open to women leaders worldwide.

Business Insurance hosted an awards luncheon in New York to recognize honorees formally; Suzy Welch, best-selling author and television commentator, served as the keynote speaker.
