Prospective participants for UNC Charlotte’s 12th annual Gold Rush 5K Run/Walk can now register for the event, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2. It will start at 9 a.m. at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex. The run/walk is part of the University’s 2013 homecoming activities.

Early bird registration is $15 for UNC Charlotte students and $22 for others through Wednesday, Jan. 23. Late registration for all participants is $25 and day-of registration is $30. Net proceeds from the race will benefit UNC Charlotte student development scholarships, and direct donations will be accepted for the American Red Cross. Additional funds can be made to the American Red Cross by checking a designated box on race entry forms.

According to Kemet Gatchell, assistant director for promotions and special events in recreational services, a few changes have been made to tthe 2013 race.

“We’re going green and using virtual race bags this year,” Gatchell said. “Amenities from sponsors will still be provided at the registration table, but coupons and other goodies that usually create paper waste will now be accessible online.”

Awards will still be provided for age group winners and overall male/female top finishers in faculty/staff, alumni and student categories. In 2012, more than 500 runners and walkers participated in the event.
