Niner WiFi to enhance campus connectivity

Monday, November 19, 2012

Connecting WiFi-capable devices on campus is about to get easier.  The Information and Technology Services (ITS) networking services team is implementing enhancements today that will provide a more convenient, secure, and reliable method to connect to the Internet wirelessly.

“We are committed to improving the campus’ connectivity for our students, faculty and staff. During the past few years, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in WiFi usage.  As the next step in responding to the demand we are deploying Niner WiFi, which our campus customers should find to be a superior experience for using wireless,” said Michael Cato, interim vice chancellor for IT and chief information officer.

According to Bob Price, interim director of client services, planning for Niner WiFi began in late 2011.

“Users will notice a change in how they access Niner WiFi versus the current method,” Price stated. “There will be improved ease-of-use because members of the campus community will not have to manually login each time to access the wireless network.”

Currently, users who move between buildings or other coverage areas must login each time to access the wireless network. Once deployed, Niner WiFi will operate seamlessly in the parts of campus covered by the wireless network.  In addition, Niner WiFi will employ advanced security encryption beyond a normal public “hot spot.”  Another advantage is that users will be able to configure a device while off campus so when they come to the University Niner WiFi will recognize it.

Faculty, staff and students will continue to have the capability to access information via the Web through Niner WiFi that they could through the existing uncc49er wireless network.

The numbers of laptops, smart phones and tablets have increased on campus as part of the evolution of technology, and the expectation is to utilize the Internet in as many places as possible, noted Price. “Our wireless network is a valuable tool for faculty, staff and student collaboration as well as a way to access information and services quickly and easily. Niner WiFi will enable us to provide the campus community with a more robust wireless experience.”

ITS is already in the planning and development stages to expand and enhance wireless coverage across campus.  This expansion will dramatically extend the reach of Niner WiFi access.
