The Department of Facilities Management  was this year’s host for the SRAPPA “Supervisor’s Toolkit” weeklong workshop, which was held at UNC Charlotte Center City.

SRAPPA is the southeastern chapter of the international organization APPA: The Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers, a group dedicated to maintaining, protecting and promoting the quality of education facilities. It serves over 1,500 learning institutions throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad.

Topics for the hands-on sessions include: supervisory skills beyond administrivia, communication methods, motivation and performance and leadership.

Clyde Derberry, facilities management’s staff development specialist and event coordinator, said, “This year’s seminar was the most engaging and intense one yet. We were particularly happy to host the event as 14 of our staff members were able to attend, versus the usual two or three we can only afford to send.”

Representatives from NCSU, Appalachian State and Winston-Salem State also attended. Kathy Boutin-Pasterz, facilities management’s coordinator with the Office of Recycling and Waste Reduction, noted, “It was a plus to be with staff from other UNC system universities, sharing and learning from the same challenges.”
