The U.S. economy is shifting to a new environment based upon information, technology and knowledge. This trend is leading organizations to explore if their employees are prepared for the future.

To address some of the latest trends in employee learning and development, the Office of Extended Academic Programs recently held a Learning and Development Summit at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.

Amy Wartham, director of corporate training in the Office of Extended Academic Programs, said sweeping changes have taken place across the business and talent management landscape during the past four years. “The ongoing recession has caused organizations to rethink their work, their workforces and their workplaces. As we enter into economic recovery, organizations are finding themselves at a critical point where they have the opportunity to engage, expand and embrace all things human capital.”

During the summit, attendees were able to network and share ideas for best practices with peers and exhibitors, which included ASTD, ISPI, OD on the Edge, Center for Applied Cognitive Studies, Princeton Review, Carolinas Healthcare Systems and UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business and Venture Program.

Speakers and panelists included representatives from TIAA-CREF, Bank of America, Time Warner Cable, SPX Corp., Family Dollar, Ingersoll Rand, Snyder’s Lance, CENTAC and InterCultural Group.
