Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx has proclaimed October “UNC Charlotte Cyber Security Awareness Month.” This declaration comes as UNC Charlotte’s College of Computing and Informatics hosts its 13th Annual Cyber Security Symposium on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
“We are quite honored that Mayor Foxx has proclaimed October as UNC Charlotte Cyber Security Awareness Month,” said Yi Deng, dean of the College of Computing and Informatics. “As the premiere conference of its type in the region, our 13th annual Cyber Security Symposium will again emphasize the urgency of dealing with cyber terrorism and the challenges that lie ahead.”
Nationally, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance also have declared October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
As part of this observance, UNC Charlotte’s Office of Information Security is actively involved in promoting cyber security. The office created a website with useful tips for the entire campus community: http://itservices.uncc.edu/security/office-information-security/security-awareness.
“UNC Charlotte is dedicated to providing a safe and secure online environment in which students, faculty, and staff can work, learn and pursue academic goals without worry,” said Chief Information Security Officer Sanjeev Sah, who will be among the distinguished speakers at the Oct. 10 symposium.
Rapid advancements in communication and information technology have increased interdependence among diverse groups, including businesses and government agencies. This requires participants to understand and take action to minimize security threats. CCI officials note, it is important to understand how governments and countries will work to secure their complex infrastructures from attack.
The 2012 Cyber Security Symposium will focus on these issues and solutions as seen by some of the leaders in the information security field.
