Salgado Maranhão, one of Brazil’s leading contemporary poets, will give a talk on rural poverty and race in his country and deliver a reading from one of his works on Thursday, Oct. 11.
The lecture “Rural Poverty and Race in Brazil” is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 145. A bilingual reading from “Blood of the Sun” will be at 4 p.m. in the College of Education, Room 010. Alexis Levitin, professor of English at SUNY-Plattsurgh, will serve as Maranhão’s translator at both events.
Maranhão is the author of “The Color of the Word,” a poetry collection that received Brazil’s highest award, the Premio de Poesia da Academia Brasileira de Letras in 2011. The earlier collection, “Mural of Winds,” won the prestigious Premio Jabuti in 1999.
The Department of Languages and Culture Studies is sponsoring both events in conjunction with the Latin American Studies program.
