Students' leadership recognized at annual awards ceremony

Ten exemplary students were acknowledged during the annual Honors and Awards Program held Monday, April 14, in the Student Union.  The ceremony recognized students’ outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.

Madison Gardner, Robert Valderrama, Ashley Peterson, Paolo Lopez-Collazo and Jonathan Shuman received the Chancellor’s Citation for Leadership and Service, presented by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois. The honor recognized an elite group of graduating seniors for their outstanding leadership and commitment to the campus community.  Their contributions have helped enrich the college experience for fellow students and develop good citizens and stewards for the future.

Coye Still IV received the Provost’s Athletic Academic Achievement Honor from Joan Lorden; it is given to a student-athlete who has excelled in the classroom while bringing recognition to the University through his or her performance as a Charlotte 49ers athlete.

Jill Foster received the Omicron Delta Kappa Freshman Leadership Award;  Omicron Delta Kappa president Jennifer Kassel presented the honor, which goes to an outstanding freshman who has exhibited meritorious qualities of scholarship and leadership.

Jonathan Curry received the Noble Niner Award from Michele Howard; it recognizes a student who leads with integrity and exemplifies the values of the Noble Niner.

Akeisha Moseley received the Chuck Lynch Award, which was presented by Arthur Jackson, vice chancellor for student affairs. The award recognizes student leadership in building relationships and programs while mentoring others to reach their maximum potential.

Susan Thomas received the Bonnie Cone Leadership Award from Dean of Students Christine Reed-Davis. The honor goes to a member of the graduating class whose leadership, scholarship and service to the UNC Charlotte embodies the spirit of University founder Bonnie E. Cone, who devoted her life to the development of UNC Charlotte.
