At UNC Charlotte, buildings are named for people who have dedicated their lives to the betterment of the state, and former Gov. Jim Martin qualifies, said UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois at a dedication ceremony for Martin Hall Thursday, Nov. 20.

Associate professor Spencer Salas will spend most of December in Oman to continue professional development efforts with that country’s K-12 teachers.

The UNC Charlotte Urban Education Collaborative recently organized and convened a two-day International Conference on Urban Education (ICUE) in Montego Bay, Jamaica, for a group of about 500 educators. The theme of this year’s conference was “Building and Sustaining Global Partnerships for Learning and Development.”

Professional Engineers of North Carolina (PENC) and the UNC Charlotte Energy Production Infrastructure Center (EPIC) will hold the “N.C. Coal Ash Forum I’ from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 4, in the EPIC Building, Room G256. A free public information workshop will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 3, in EPIC, Room G256.

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences will host a retirement reception for Larry Mellichamp, professor of botany and director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts Lobby. He is retiring after 38 years of service.

Nearly 70 nontraditional students were recognized for their academic achievements during the annual scholarship luncheon held by the Office of Adult Students and Evening Services (OASES).
