EHS honored nationally for outreach efforts

UNC Charlotte’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) was recognized by the national Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association for its outreach on personal safety in the workplace.

The office received the Marketing Single Media Award of Honor for the self-produced video “Just Like Any Day,” which showcases everyday hazards that can exist on campus and emphasizes the importance of individual responsibility in safety at the University. The award was presented July 14 during a ceremony in Tucson, Arizona.

“We are ecstatic to receive this award, which is nationally recognized among institutions of higher learning,” said Darius Griffin, director of EHS. “I am proud of my team members who created the video, and I hope that it will provide inspiration to other environmental health and safety professionals to approach hazard recognition in different ways.”

EHS safety specialists Tameka Alston and Kirstan Blender produced the video.

“Our goal was to bring attention to these unsafe actions and conditions and emphasize how safe behavior on everyone’s part can lead to a safer learning, living, teaching and working environment,” Alston said.

Blender echoed Alston’s sentiments.

“We wanted this video to allow employees to see ‘hazards in action’ and promote a greater sense of awareness,” Blender said. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, we hope a video is worth much more.”

“Just Like Any Day” is currently used in orientation sessions for new faculty and staff and in other training sessions. Alston and Blender said they hope to create more videos for EHS on other topics.
