Check out the latest Chancellor’s ‘Fast Five’

Thursday, May 18, 2017

The Chancellor’s “Fast Five” update provides the campus community a behind-the-scenes glimpse into some of the projects and priorities that occupy the chancellor’s time and attention.

Thanks to an especially busy couple of weeks, this update is a bit overdue. But I did want to check in with you once more before the summer break.

  1. The main update to share, of course, is the spring graduation of UNC Charlotte's Class of 2017. In ceremonies on Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13, we celebrated the graduation of about 4,300 undergraduate and graduate students.
  2. In recent days, we have celebrated with vice chancellor for student affairs Dr. Art Jackson as he heads into a well-deserved retirement, and we have announced the hiring of Dr. Kevin Bailey who will assume that role effective July 24. Dr. Jackson will be missed around here, but we're excited to welcome Dr. Bailey back to UNC Charlotte where he began his career in Student Affairs 27 years ago.
  3. This week, I'll be joining my special assistant for constituent relations, Betty Doster, in a series of visits to legislators in Raleigh where we will hope to make our case on a number of items related to the budget that is currently under consideration by the N.C. House and Senate. From there, I will move on to a Board of Governors meeting in Chapel Hill.
  4. Conversations continue with various groups on the subjects of medical and legal education at UNC Charlotte. We are also in the process of forming a planning committee to examine the potential for an undergraduate program in Data Science and Business Analytics that will complement our existing master's programs in Health Informatics and Data Science.
  5. We are about two-thirds of the way through our $200 million "Exponential" Campaign, the largest private fundraising effort in our history. Coming up later this month is a major gift announcement from yet another community partner. Stay tuned. We hope to complete the campaign by the end of 2020, if not sooner.

It was a great semester and a great year, and I hope you all will take some time this summer to relax and enjoy family and friends. Stay safe, and Go Niners!

Philip L. Dubois, Chancellor
