Communications studies major wins national award

Tiera Gibson, a communication studies major, recently received the Outstanding Tutor Award from the National Association of Communication Centers (NACC).

Gibson, a peer consultant for the University Speaking Center, was selected from 10 finalists for this national award. The honor, presented at this year’s NACC conference at Grand Valley State University, recognizes an individual who has demonstrated excellence as a tutor in a communication center.

A transfer student from UNC Greensboro, Gibson was the first undergraduate tutor for the fledgling University Speaking Center when it opened in early 2016. (Read more about the University Speaking Center here.)

“Tiera became engaged in every step of the center-making process,” said Debbie Baker, center founder and senior lecturer in communication studies. “Logistical decisions and revisions were — and continue to be — numerous and necessary in scheduling appointments, emailing correspondences, developing contracts, designing feedback surveys, and developing and marketing events. The University Speaking Center would not have progressed so quickly without Tiera's knowledge, support, adaptability and exceptional consulting skills.”
