Student Employee of the Year Stacey Myers plans to put her work experience with Recreational Services to use as a graduate assistant this fall.

The Georgia native, who is scheduled to graduate in May, will oversee personal fitness at the University of Central Florida – with plans for a career in campus recreation.

Myers, a senior kinesiology major, has worked for UNC Charlotte’s Recreational Services since 2013. During her four years in the department, she has served as an intramural official, group fitness instructor, personal trainer, fitness program supervisor and a group fitness intern.

Nominated by her supervisor, Myers was honored for her “unyielding dedication” to the department, including her desire to make campus fitness activities accessible to all students regardless of physical abilities. Her humility also was listed as one of her best qualities.

“Stacey truly does not realize how many people she has positively affected because she does not do her job for recognition. She does her job because it gives her an opportunity to help people. I have no doubt in my mind that Stacey Myers is going to change the world,” wrote Elizabeth Bowman, former assistant director for fitness programs.

For Myers, who said the award was a complete shock, the best part of her job is the people she gets to work with.

“Recreational Services really is a family,” she said. “I know I can call or text them anytime. They are more than coworkers or supervisors.”

The 2017 Student Employee of the Year luncheon and awards ceremony was held Wednesday, April 12, in Tate Hall at the Harris Alumni Center. The event recognized exemplary student workers among the approximately 5,000 employed each academic year across all divisions at UNC Charlotte. Collectively, students represent the University’s largest employee population.

“Students work in a wide variety of jobs, in a multitude of offices around campus,” said Teresa Shook, the student employment coordinator in Human Resources, who is responsible for organizing the event each year. “Some are assisting in groundbreaking research, others are working in offices, labs or stockrooms, and still more are working in community service-based jobs. Wherever they are working and whatever they are doing, their contributions are immeasurable.”
