Architecture team places second in New York Build competition

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

A design entry by UNC Charlotte School of Architecture students Naz Modaresahmadi and Robby Stubbs and faculty members Peter Wong and Chris Jarrett (School of Architecture director) won second prize in the New York Affordable Housing Challenge, an international architecture competition sponsored by New York Build 2017.

The competition posed the question: “How do we use the limited resources, both in terms of plots of land and the availability of finance, to create homes and communities that can continue to be diverse and open to all?”

Participants designed a pilot-phase concept for affordable housing in New York City. The jury included Brittany Utting of Thomas Phifer and Partners, John Paul Rysavy and Daniel Jacobs of SHoP, Jenna Dezinski of University of Texas Austin and Philip Anzalone of New York City College of Technology.

More than 90 teams submitted proposals; winners were announced March 15.

The UNC Charlotte team’s proposal, Out of Sight, presents an L-shaped, 280-square-foot configuration “that can be arranged in multiple orientations to expand space beyond one’s expectations." The proposed unit was placed into three different locations and situation — a United Nations site, a Harlem site and one along the East River. See full descriptions and renderings here.

Modaresahmadi is a Master of Architecture student; Stubbs is a Bachelor of Architecture student. Both expect to graduate this year.
