Police and Public Safety’s David Coleman dies

David Coleman, associate director of police support services, died Wednesday, March 8. He was 65.

During his five-year tenure with the University’s Police and Public Safety Department, Coleman oversaw the Communications Center; records; property and evidence management; training; selection, recruitment and background investigations; and a number of other administrative operations. Prior to joining the University, he was a security supervisor at the Westin Charlotte Hotel. A law enforcement veteran with more than 40 years of experience, he served as chief/executive director of school safety and security for the Cleveland Municipal School District and deputy chief of police for the Fort Wayne Police Department.

“Deputy Director David Coleman served our community with honor and integrity. He was a beloved leader of the UNC Charlotte Police Department, and he left a positive impression on those fortunate enough to work with such an exemplary gentleman. He will be forever missed,” said PPS Chief Jeff Baker.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 11 at the Greater Vision United Methodist Church; James Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
