Commencement to go ‘green’

Wednesday, March 1, 2017

For spring 2017 commencement, undergraduates and those awarded certificates will wear green robes at this year’s ceremonies. Master’s and doctoral graduates will continue to wear black robes.

The UNC Charlotte Commencement Committee approved the change in robe color for undergraduates; student leaders Carrie Nowell, vice president of the Student Government Association (SGA), and Vincent Cahill, SGA secretary for state and national affairs, spearheaded the move.

An SGA survey of students indicated that 64 percent of the 4,000 respondents favored switching to UNC Charlotte green robes.

According to an article in the Niner Times, Cahill thought adopting green robes for commencement was a good project for the SGA as a way to build Niner pride. Nowell provided Chancellor Philip L. Dubois with the survey results and a sample of the green robe, and he endorsed the change.

Graduating students who will participate in spring 2017 commencement exercises will be able to pick up their robes at the Commencement Fair, which will be in the Popp Martin Student Union, Tuesday through Thursday, March 21-23.
