Tony Porter to discuss how to break out of the ‘man box’

Author, educator and activist Tony Porter will present “Breaking Out of the Man Box: The Next Generation of Manhood” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 14, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall, as part of the Women’s and Gender Studies Guest Speaker Series.

Porter, CEO of A Call to Men, is internationally recognized for efforts to prevent violence against women, while promoting a healthy, respectful manhood. He is the author of “Breaking Out of the Man Box” and the visionary for “NFL Dads: Dedicated to Daughters.”  

As an adviser to the National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and Major League Baseball, Porter provides policy consultation, working extensively with player engagement and facilitating violence prevention and healthy manhood training. He is considered a leading voice on male socialization, the intersection of masculinity and violence against women. His 2010 TED talk was named one of the “Top 10 TED Talks Every Man Should See,” according to GQ magazine.

Porter’s 7 p.m., March 14, talk is free and open to the public; the Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Center for Wellness, Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Multicultural Resource Center and the Gender Excellence Learning Community are event cosponsors.

Before his public lecture, Porter will present a student workshop “Healthy Masculinity: Collaborating to End Sexism and Racism” at 5 p.m. in the Cone University Center, Room 112.
