Chapel Hill professor to lecture on American Muslim marriage practices

Juliane Hammer, associate professor and Kenan Rifai Scholar of Islamic Studies at UNC Chapel Hill, will present “For Love and Mercy: Exploring Matrimonial Practices in American Muslim Communities” at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the Cone University Center, Room 111.

In this talk, Hammer will explore how American Muslims find spouses, how expectations and practices related to marriage are negotiated and how Muslim weddings constitute both religious rituals and social events.

The Center for Professional and Applied Ethics is sponsoring this free, public lecture with support from the Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund and CLAS speaker funds.
