Gene Johnson (’73), chair of EXPONENTIAL: The Campaign for UNC Charlotte, recently received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Chancellor Philip L. Dubois presented Johnson with the award during a reception on campus.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is among the most prestigious awards conferred by the governor of North Carolina. Created in 1963, this honor is awarded to individuals for exemplary service to the state of North Carolina and their communities that is above and beyond the call of duty, and their efforts will have made a significant impact and strengthened North Carolina.

“UNC Charlotte is a better place because of Gene’s involvement,” said Dubois. “His efforts span the entire University and impact everyone associated with our campus.”

Johnson has led fundraising efforts to support UNC Charlotte’s new football and marching band programs and the accounting program, and currently, he serves as chair of EXPONENTIAL, the largest campaign in history of the University with a goal of $200 million. He also has served on many University boards including the Alumni Board, 49ers Athletic Association, Belk College of Business Advisory Council, Board of Trustees and the Foundation Board.

“Gene is making a difference in the greater Charlotte community and in our region, contributing his time, talent and resources to a variety of important initiatives,” Dubois said. “He never has to be called upon to make a difference. Gene just acts, and in doing so, inspires others to follow.”

Other friends of UNC Charlotte who have been awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine include Smoky Bissell, Jerry Richardson and Ruth Shaw.
