UNC Charlotte is continuing its efforts to be a leader in sustainable practices, and the latest example is the addition of 28 electric vehicle charging stations in campus parking decks.

Increasingly, students, faculty and staff have expressed an interest in charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs), said Tyler Sytsma, University sustainability coordinator.

“During SOAR sessions this past summer, a number of future students and their parents inquired about the University’s efforts to embrace alternative forms of transportation, which indicates more and more prospective students will be seeking a university that is a good steward of the environment,” Sytsma stated. “As a progressive campus, the University decided to seek funding to offer EV charging stations.”

A $67,000 state grant that was part of the Clean Fuels Advanced Technology Project financed the purchase of the charging stations; the Charlotte Green Initiative provided funding for signage at charging station locations, which are in CRI, North, South and Student Union decks.

“Installing these EV charging stations is a positive step forward in the University’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2050,” added Sytsma.
