The NFL Carolina Panthers have added Charlotte 49ers' all-time leading receiver Austin Duke to the team's practice squad. He is now the third member of the 49ers original class to be signed to an NFL in-season roster.

Mathematician receives lifetime achievement award

The Russian Academy of Science's Sobolev Institute of Mathematics has awarded its 2017 Gold Medal for distinguished impact in mathematics to Mikhail Klibanov, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UNC Charlotte. This award is considered a lifetime achievement award in the field of mathematics.

Scholarship to foster nursing talent

The family of the late Mary Gwen Schaffernoth, a UNC Charlotte School of Nursing alumna, has endowed a scholarship in her memory. Established by a $28,000 donation from Schaffernoth’s husband, Chas, the Mary Gwen Robins Schaffernoth Nursing Scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate students pursuing a nursing degree.
