Mary Tuma, associate professor of fibers in the Department of Art + Art History, has the piece "Lingering Presence" in the international traveling exhibition “The Map is not the Territory.”
The display features work by 39 artists and focuses on relationships and commonalities in Palestinian, Native American and Irish experiences related to invasion, occupation and colonization. “The Map is not the Territory” was at P21 Gallery in London through July 25; it travels to the Multicultural Arts Center in East Cambridge, Mass., in September, and it will be at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Mich., in January 2016.
Tuma, who is of Irish and Palestinian descent and studied in Egypt, in describing her work, "Lingering Presence," said, “We are part of the fabric of the place, sewn in layers, patched, and rewoven...We will always be home, even as we long for home."
