School of Architecture alumnus Chuck Travis was inducted into the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Election to the College of Fellows is the highest honor bestowed by AIA upon an architect in the United States. Travis joins only three other members in the North Carolina AIA as well as 147 AIA members nationwide to be awarded this prestigious designation this year.
Travis graduated from UNC Charlotte in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture; he subsequently received a Bachelor of Architecture from N.C. State University. A principal at Housing Studio in Charlotte, Travis also is mayor of Cornelius. In 2010, he received the AIA Charlotte Service Award for his “extraordinary service to the community and profession.”
“It is the honor of a lifetime for an architect to be elected to the College of Fellows,” said Travis. “This is the type of award that you never feel you truly deserve, as I have had so many wonderful partners, associates and employees at Housing Studio assist in helping me throughout my career. It continues to be a privilege to be an architect on a daily basis. I am very grateful.”
The Fellowship of the AIA honors architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level and who have achieved an exemplary standard of excellence in the profession. Members of the FAIA are elected by a jury of their peers. Of more than 85,000 AIA members, only 3,200 have been given this honor.
