David Broome, UNC Charlotte vice chancellor and general counsel, has received the Ann L. Majestic Distinguished Service Award, given by the N.C. Bar Association’s Education Law Section. He was presented the honor during a ceremony Friday, April 24, in Cary.
The award recognizes outstanding leadership by an attorney in the field of education who has a record of professional, community and personal achievement in the representation of educational institutions, including public and private schools, colleges or universities as well as an involvement with parents, teachers, faculty or administrators. Formerly the Distinguished Service Award, it was renamed in memory of Majestic, an attorney who dedicated her career to improving the field of education.
Broome has served the state of North Carolina as a higher education law attorney for nearly 40 years. After earning a Juris Doctor from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law, Broome became the lead attorney in the UNC-Chapel Hill Business Affairs Division. After a stint with the N.C. Department of Justice, he returned to UNC-Chapel Hill for eight years before becoming senior associate general counsel at North Carolina State University. Since arriving at UNC Charlotte in 2004, Broome has provided expert advice during a time of stunning growth at the University, according to letters of nomination.
The catalyst behind several key initiatives and accomplishments, Broome helped establish the University’s enterprise compliance program and guided the University through the hire of UNC Charlotte’s first director of University compliance. He was instrumental in the establishment and staffing of the University’s Title IX Office, which opened in fall 2014.
“Dave Broome is not just an exceptional lawyer, he is a mentor to the attorneys who have had the opportunity to work with him,” Deputy General Counsel Jesh Humphrey wrote in his nomination letter. “A valued member of the chancellor’s leadership team, a visible and engaged senior administrator at UNC Charlotte and a treasured community advocate, Dave has devoted his career to the University of North Carolina system for almost 40 years. His impact will be felt for another 40.”
The Charlotte Business Journal recognized Broome as a finalist for its 2013 Corporate Counsel of the Year Award.
Through Literacy PALS (Partners Achieving Literacy Success), a volunteer tutoring program that equips UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff to work with grades K-12 students, Broome reads and tutors students regularly at Nathaniel Alexander Elementary School in Charlotte.
