The nation’s top educational facilities organization, APPA, recently presented its 2014 Award for Excellence in Facilities Management to UNC Charlotte at its meeting in San Diego, Calif. Phil Jones, associate vice chancellor, facilities management, accepted the honor on behalf of the University.

“Campuses that receive the Award for Excellence are true leaders in educational facilities management,” said David Cain, APPA’s immediate past vice president, professional affairs, and the chair of the Awards and Recognition Committee.  “These institutions demonstrate a commitment to providing a strong learning environment that supports its educational direction.”

The APPA Award for Excellence is designed to recognize and advance excellence in the field of educational facilities.  Award for Excellence nominations are in the areas of leadership, strategic and operational planning, customer focus, information and analysis, development and management of human resources, process management and performance results. Nominated institutions also submit to a site review conducted by an awards evaluation team.

“We want to thank APPA for recognizing UNC Charlotte with this Award for Excellence,” said Chancellor Philip L. Dubois. “At this place, the quality and functionality of our building and grounds make a huge difference in our ability to recruit and retain the highest quality faculty, staff and students.”

In leading the facilities management team, Jones said supporting the University’s phenomenal growth was a factor in being selected for the APPA Award of Excellence.

“We have adopted a four-part vision, and our people work hard every day as we aspire to be a leader in facilities management, characterized by safety and excellence and an adaptable responsive team of teams providing high quality facilities and services,” said Jones. “The bottom line for us is that we are not just planning, building, operating and maintaining the campus, but we are creating something we can all be proud of – a campus of distinction.”

UNC Charlotte is the fourth UNC system campus to win the APPA Award of Excellence since 1991. East Carolina (1999), Fayetteville State (1991) and N.C. State (2007) are the other campuses recognized by the organization.
