Wednesday, November 7, 2012

The documentary “The Apple Pushers” will be screened at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Student Union Movie Theater.

The Apple Pushers” follows immigrant street vendors through New York City and deals with topics at the intersection of food access, immigration and entrepreneurship. Initially exhibited on Earth Day in several cities across the nation, the film has received critical acclaim from reviewers. A panel discussion will follow the free, public screening.

“The discussion includes a dynamic panel of individuals from across campus,” said Regena Brown, assistant director for multicultural student organizations in the Multicultural Resource Center, which is hosting the screening. “Each participant has a personal and professional interest in understanding health, obesity and healthy foods and eating habits. They will focus on how the concepts and message in the film tie back to the college student experience.”

Panel members are Elizabeth Malone, a counselor in the Counseling Center; Shawnte Elbert, health educator, Student Health Center; Sophia Jordan-Marshall, director, Recreational Services; Elizabeth Racine from the College of Health and Human Services;  and Katie Powers, University dietitian, Student Health Center.
