Friday Night Live comedy series to present ‘Shaking Not Stirred’

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Stand-up comedians Will Marfori and Samuel Comroe will bring their unique brands of humor to UNC Charlotte at 7 p.m., Oct. 12, in Cone University Center, After Hours Lounge.

Their free, public performance, billed as “Shaking Not Stirred,” is co-sponsored by Niners on the Weekend (NOW), Campus Activities Board (CAB) and the Office of Disability Services.

Through his performance, Marfori shares his experiences and unique perspective on life with cerebral palsy. Now a member of the Norfolk, Va., Plan B Improv, Marfori previously performed for Carnival Cruise Lines and was the second place winner of the 2003 World Series of Comedy.  His album “Are You One of Those Slow People?” is in regular rotation on XM radio.

Comroe,  based in Los Angeles, engages audiences with anecdotes about life with Tourette syndrome, growing up in a large family and the trials and tribulations experienced by young comics. A top 10 finalist on NBC’s “Stand-Up for Diversity,” Comroe tours college campuses frequently.

James Contratto, assistant director of weekend programming for student activities, expects “Shaking Not Stirred” will build upon the momentum from last month’s Friday Night Live, which drew an audience of 80-plus.

“They are really hilarious comics, and they’re going to give one great show,” said Contratto. “The goals of this series are not only to answer student demand for more campus comedy shows but also to bring more weekend entertainment for students to Cone University Center.”

Disability services assistant director Mia Haris hopes the partnership will highlight Disability Awareness Month in a positive way. “I applaud CAB and NOW for choosing to make others aware of disabilities through humor. It’s important to be aware of the abilities that make everyone unique and to realize the commonalities among those with and without disabilities. Knowing it’s okay to laugh at ourselves and others’ reactions to us is what the comedians will share.”
