UCC to hold annual Career and Public Service Expo

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

The University Career Center (UCC) will host its annual Career and Public Service Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.

Representatives from corporations, government agencies and graduate schools will be on campus to recruit upcoming graduates for full-time positions, as well as students to fill internships and co-ops.  Organizations registered to date include: BMW Manufacturing, Capgemini Financial Services, Concord Police Department, Duke Energy, Lowe’s Companies, Microsoft, North Carolina Teacher Corps, Peace Corps, Target, TIAA-CREF, and the UNC Charlotte Graduate School.  An updated list of registered organizations is available online.

Students of all majors and class levels are invited to attend, and May 2013 graduates are reminded that some employers make only one recruiting visit per year and will not return to campus in the spring.  Students also should remember that fairs are only one way the UCC works to connect students and employers.  Smaller organizations may utilize strategies such as experiential learning and connections through student organizations to seek their new hires.

Faculty members are encouraged to announce the expo to their classes and are invited to attend to make connections with representatives.  Students should dress professionally in business attire and bring resumes for recruiters.  During the week leading up to the fair, the University Career Center will offer pre-fair resume critiques and programming on how to prepare for job fairs, interview effectively, and dress appropriately.

Other University Career Center updates include:

The 2011 Post Graduation Study has been completed (by the CPCC Research Center).  Each college will receive a hard copy through its college AAAT representative, and there will be a link on the University Career Center’s website.

One of the UCC’s new software packages, CareerSpots, provides an opportunity for faculty to use career videos and career development tips from more than 550 professionally developed national clips; UNC Charlotte is featured in one. The center has partnered with the Office of International Programs to offer Going Global. Learn more here.

NC Campus Compact meetings will resume this year in September for continued sharing regarding civic engagement in the classroom and through student groups; any faculty member interested in service learning may join the center’s listserv of 85 colleagues across campus and three brown bag lunch meetings by contacting Denise Dwight Smith.

The Career and Public Service Expo is open only to UNC Charlotte students and alumni.  Direct questions to Rebecca Cody.
