Several six-x-six-foot plots in the UNC Charlotte community garden are available currently on a first-come, first-served basis. The organic garden is located on a 50-x-50-foot section of land near the Facilities Management/PPS Building.
Larry Mellichamp, director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will conduct a gardening workshop and orientation for participants from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10, in the McMillan Greenhouse.
Katie Powers, a registered dietician and member of the Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness (ACCEHW), said the community garden is envisioned as a gathering place to meet new people, learn new skills and grow healthy food.
“The garden represents a joining together of the University’s commitment to sustainability and to employee health,” Powers said.
The project is a partnership between the ACCEHW and dining services. Amateurs and experts are welcome; participants must provide their own plants.
Proceeds from an annual membership fee of $10 go toward maintenance and purchasing gardening materials for use by participants. To reserve a plot or to request more information, email Powers at mkpowers@uncc.edu.
