North Deck wins design award

The University’s North Deck received an award of merit for its design and functionality in the 2012 International Parking Institute Awards of Excellence competition.

The parking deck, which has 1,171 spaces, is the first to feature induction lighting and white stain ceilings. According to facility management officials, induction lighting is an energy-saving feature that provides brighter light. In conjunction with the white stain ceilings, the deck will be better lit, which will help deter criminal activity, thus making for a safer parking area.

In the actual construction of the deck, concrete was poured as a cast-in-place tensioned method, which has been documented to last longer and reduce maintenance costs.

The exterior of the deck is comprised of an attractive brick façade, and the cascading grand stair on the front of the deck provides an attractive architectural element on the front elevation, said Gary Caton, director of parking and transportation services.  Jennifer Evans, a construction manager with facilities management, noted the front stairs were designed with the possibility that the road in front of the deck could connect with Mallard Creek Church Road and thus the deck would be an attractive structure for those entering campus.

Other design features include a covered area for bus loading and convenient, one-way drive aisles and angled parking.

The University shared the award of merit with ADW Architects, the architects of record; parking consultant Carl Walker Inc.; and design consultant Neighboring Concepts.
