Wellness promotion awarded ABC grant

The Wellness Promotion Department of the Student Health Center recently received a $45,000 grant from the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board.

According to Debbie Insley, director of wellness services, the grant will support the department’s Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) program, an integrated support system for UNC Charlotte students who are in recovery from alcohol or substance abuse

Insley stated the grant will fund the hiring of a part-time marketing specialist to promote the existence of the Collegiate Recovery Community program.

“We wish to provide support and education for those in recovery and build visibility for our CRC on campus, in our state and across the nation so that recovering students will know that UNC Charlotte provides a supportive and sober college environment in which to pursue their education,” said Insley. “UNC Charlotte’s program is the first Collegiate Recovery Community to be established throughout any of the UNC system schools, so it fills an important need in North Carolina.”

In June, officials announced the CRC would have dedicated meeting space in the Student Health Center; IKEA Charlotte is partnering to furnish the space.
