Global energy expert to speak

Bernard Weinstein, associate director of the Maguire Energy Institute at Southern Methodist University (SMU), will give the talk "Maintaining a Diverse Portfolio: The Key to Global Energy Dominance” at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Atkins Library, Halton Reading Room, as part of the 2017-18 International Speaker Series.

Weinstein also is adjunct professor of business economics in the SMU Cox School of Business. From 1989 to 2009, he was director of the Center for Economic Development and Research at the University of North Texas, where he is now an emeritus professor of applied economics. He will discuss his perspectives on the greatest challenges facing the United States and world in terms of energy resources, renewable energy and the latest technologies for reducing global emissions.

As a researcher, Weinstein has authored or co-authored numerous books, monographs and articles on the subjects of economic development, energy security, public policy and taxation, and his work has appeared in professional journals such as Land Economics, Challenge, Society, Policy Review, Economic Development Quarterly, Policy Studies Journal and Annals of Regional Science.

His op-eds have been published in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, Investor’s Business Daily, The Financial Times, Los Angeles Times and a number of regional newspapers and magazines.
