Faculty and Friends Concert Series to open with tribute to jazz icon

The Department of Music's 2016-17 Faculty and Friends Concert Series opens on Monday, Aug. 29, with a tribute to the great jazz saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker.

Performed by the Faculty Jazz Quintet on “Bird's” birthday, the program showcases some of bebop’s best-known tunes, including “Parker’s Mood,” “Shaw Nuff” and “Relaxin’ at Camarillo,” as well as jazz standards that Parker’s brilliance made his own – “Cherokee,” “Donna Lee” and “Embraceable You.”

The Faculty Jazz Quintet features Will Campbell on saxophone, Mike Hackett on trumpet, Noel Freidline on piano, Ron Brendle on bass and Rick Dior on drums.

This concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Rowe Arts Building, Recital Hall. Tickets are $10; $8 for UNC Charlotte faculty, staff, alumni and all students.
