Day of Convocation begins new students’ UNC Charlotte journey

Event Date:
August 21, 2017 - 8:00 AM
Location:
on campus

For new undergraduate students, Monday, Aug. 21, marks their first official day as 49ers. It also is Day of Convocation, an annual event to welcome new freshmen and transfer students to the UNC Charlotte community.

Students will begin the Day of Convocation by assembling at their respective colleges for morning activities. Then, as a group, students will walk to Halton Arena for the Day of Convocation ceremony, which will feature remarks from University leaders. They will outline the University’s history, mission, values and academic expectations. Doors open at 10:30 a.m.; the ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon.

After the ceremony, students will return to their colleges for department-specific programming to acclimate them to their educational journey.

“Day of Convocation is a University tradition that highlights the accomplishments of the incoming freshmen and transfer class and delivers the academic expectations of new students who are entering our community,” said Cathy Blat, director of the University Center for Academic Excellence. “We believe this unifying experience helps incoming 49ers better understand how they contribute to the body of scholars at UNC Charlotte.”

Between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 20, new students can pick up a free “Day One” T-shirt in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center to wear on Monday.

Faculty and first-year course instructors are encouraged to participate in Day of Convocation, too. They will process in regalia for the Day of Convocation ceremony in Halton Arena.

On Aug. 21, classes scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. will not meet; classes that meet at 5 p.m. or later will be held as scheduled.
